Either/Orchestra News: Agachiko tonight - Da Unit on Saturday

Thursday, May 31: Agachiko
Sally O'Brien's Somerville, 9 pm - no cover!

Gabrielle Agachiko and her wonderful six-piece band have been working on our debut recording, but we're airing it out at Sally O'Brien's in Union, Square, Somerville.  No cover!

And we're got a brand new tune for you: Don't Worry Sister

Gabrielle Agachiko, voice; Ken Field, flute; Scott Getchell, trumpet; Russ Gershon, tenor sax;  Sam Davis, guitar; Blake Newman, bass;
Phil Neighbors, drums

"When the band is cooking — when, say, Getchell and Gershon take turns letting loose Coltrane-like cries on one of Agachiko's most soul-baring tunes, "Unlovable" — the effect might remind you a bit of Nina Simone, but also of Abbey Lincoln's work with her then-husband, Max Roach."
–Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix

Bela Fleck -Across the Imaginary Divide (Rounder 2012)

2012 collaboration between banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck and Jazz pianist Marcus Roberts and his trio. Roberts' Trio is known for its virtuosic style: a style that is strongly rhythmic, melodic, and filled with dynamic contrast. Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. He has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. "It was a lot of fun working with B‚la on this project. He has a limitless imagination and, like our trio, he is willing to do whatever it takes to make a great record. The recording brings our two styles together in a way that I think will be really enjoyable for the listeners," said Roberts.

Steve Smith & Vital Information LIVE! ONE GREAT NIGHT (CD+DVD)30th Anniversary Tour (May 31-June 27)

LIVE! One Great Night – a CD + DVD set to be released May 29, 2012 on the BFM Jazz label.

LIVE! One Great Night – a CD + DVD set to be released May 29, 2012 on the BFM Jazz label – captures Vital Information in their natural habitat: A packed club with an audience of music lovers and the band in high gear, pulling out all the stops for the entire set. The all-star lineup of keyboardist Tom Coster (Santana/Gabor Szabo), bassist Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty/Billy Cobham), guitarist Vinny Valentino (Bill Evans/Jimmy McGriff) and drummer Steve Smith (Journey/Hiromi /Steps Ahead) serve up a veritable banquet of sounds, from slamming funk and syncopated second-line grooves to seriously swinging, up-tempo B-3 burners, South Indian inspired jams and sizzling fuzoid romps. Steve Smith has this to say about Vital Information’s philosophy, “Our music allows for individual expression and re-invention. We thrive on swing, groove, and creativity. We want to surprise each other every night on the bandstand with new ideas and in the process keep our audience ‘in the moment’ with us.”
Now approaching their 30th year of touring and recording since their initial 1983 release, Steve Smith and Vital Information has become a formidable jazz/fusion juggernaut. Over the past 30 years, some of the extraordinary musicians that have toured and recorded with Vital Information include Mike Stern, Dean Brown, Tim Landers, Kai Eckhardt, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Andrews, and Frank Gambale.
The group’s founder and drummer, Steve Smith, has a history that stretches from Journey and Steps Ahead to The Buddy Rich Big Band, Ahmad Jamal, Zakir Hussain, and Hiromi. Steve has recently been voted 2012’s #1 Fusion Drummer in Modern Drummer Magazine. Over the years Smith has won a number of Modern Drummer reader’s polls including #1 All-Around Drummer - five years in a row - in 2001 he was named one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time, and in 2002 he was voted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. From 2008-2010 Drum! Magazine readers have voted Steve #1 Jazz Drummer. His Hudson Music DVDs Steve Smith - Drumset Technique/History of the U.S. Beat and Drum Legacy – Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants are best sellers in the music educational market.
Smith is quick to point out that a key to the band’s remarkable versatility is its bassist. "Baron Browne brought a real serious groove element to the band," says Smith of his rhythm section partner since 1998. "He’s my favorite bass player to play with because he can play all styles and he always makes the music feel so good.” Browne has worked in the past with Gary Burton, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty, Steps Ahead, and Tom Jones.
The distinctive multi-keyboardist Tom Coster, whose versatility ranges from Hammond B3 to accordion, was playing with Gabor Szabo and Rahsaan Roland Kirk before he came to prominence in Santana, a stay that lasted nine years. Coster composed and co-composed many of Santana’s most popular tunes including “Europa”, “Dance Sister Dance”, and “Carnaval”. Tom has recorded many solo albums under his own name and has been a member of Vital Information since 1986.
Vinny Valentino has been touring and recording with Vital Information since 2006 and is a recording artist and educator. At age 16, influenced by the music of George Benson, Vinny began pursuing jazz as a career. He recalls, "The turning point for me was hearing George Benson in concert; it was an eye-opening experience." Vinny and his mentor George have since developed a close friendship. George Benson refers to Vinny as a "young genius with brilliant tone and fresh ideas."
Vinny earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Howard University and has shared the stage or recording studio with such jazz greats as Gary Bartz, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, John Pattitucci, Richard Bona, Bob Moses, George Benson, Steve Gadd, Dennis Chambers, and Jimmy McGriff.
There isn't a more flexible and disciplined band of killer players on the jazz scene today than Vital Information.
"Vital Information is one of improvised music's best-kept secrets, the tunes are adventurous, and they always groove. The musicians shoot for, and achieve, real emotion rather than soulless fireworks." - Felix Contreras, JazzTimes

Karla Chisholm-Moving On (2011)

“Indie Jazz with a Pop Edge”. That’s how this fresh new artist describes her unique sound. In a world of genre bending and a mixing bowl of sounds Chisholm adds her own bold flavor with songs like “Brain Snow”, track 2 on her soon to be released EP.
The first flavor to hit your pallet is a funk groove with bold horns. Then you’ll taste notes of Jazz and a hint of Latin percussion. The complexity is intriguing and seductively easy to taste. But don’t expect an album of all Jazzy Latin Funk. This artist has a lot to offer and as the title “Moving On” suggests this 6 song EP is a journey. From where it’s been to where it’s going… This is one ride you don’t want to miss!
Nationally renowned instrumentalists accompany this vibrant new Artist as she steps onto the world stage with her debut release, “Moving On”. This All Star line up includes Musical Director and Bassist Mike Pope (Chick Corea, John Patitucci Michael Brecker), Pianist Dan Reynolds (Eddie Harris, Najee, Maysa), Drummer Mike Aubin (Deanna Bogart), Spanish Guitarist Miguel Bard (Shahin and Sepehr), and Trumpeter Kevin Burns (Air Men of Note).
Prepare to dine on a roller coaster of emotions, rising and falling with Karla as she shares her syncopated journey of life and love. This unique songstress and soul has ignited a musical fuse that is sure to be the hottest new face of the music industry."

Gabriel Zufferey - Contemplation (Bee Jazz 2012)

Gabriel has viewed Contemplation as an open letter, a reflexion about his own world and the other’s one. Like an initiatory path leading to his own fulfillment, and beyond: the meeting with others, the more genuine expression, free and invested, the understanding and look beyond prejudice and faults.
Gabriel Zufferey has a delicate and powerful touch, tuneful and thoughtful, and a constant groove. He gets a confidence and a disturbing maturity, a large musical intelligence, and an unsuspected harmonic field. His touch has been connected to some pianists like Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Brad Mehldau or even Bud Powell. Bee Jazz

Brain Inventory Trio - The Wall (Konnex Records 2012)

"The recently formed Brain Inventory Trio not only bridges two cultures but also brings us a fusion of styles from jazz and folk music to rock, throwing all preconceptions out the window. With American pianist Michael Jefry Stevens and two Finns, saxophonist Esa Pietilä and cellist Juho Laitinen, in the line‐up, the trio's talents span across a multitude of musical genres. The upcoming album was recorded at a concert played in Helsinki in 2010.

Both Michael Jefry Stevens and Esa Pietilä are widely known for their avant‐garde improvisation and visionary take on music. The upcoming album, The Wall, finally brings together the two musicians and their original and distinctive styles of freeform jazz. Recorded live, the album's material is fifty percent composed pieces and fifty percent pure collective improvisation.

The unusual instrumentation of piano, cello (both acoustic and electric) and saxophones opens possibilities for new musical expression. The absence of a rhythm section leaves more room for free expression, with Stevens' multi‐faceted style and piano sound merging with the effects of the electric cello to create a massive, almost orchestral sound world.

“The fact that we come from different cultural and musical backgrounds adds just the right amount of friction and tension to our music. For us, it was important to carry the element of surprise and musical risk‐taking of our live performances over to the album. The result is something very unusual that's neither traditional jazz nor freeform, but something in‐ between,” says Pietilä."

Bob Mintzer Big Band's "For the Moment": New MCG Jazz CD Due June 19

Guests on Brazilian-Themed Session Include
Chico Pinheiro, Russell Ferrante, Alex Acuna, Peter Erskine

May 29, 2012

Bob Mintzer Big Band For the MomentThe Grammy Award-winning Bob Mintzer Big Band has explored diverse styles of music in its illustrious 25-year recording history -- from New York and Afro-Cuban to Count Basie and John Coltrane. On the band's new MCG Jazz CD, For the Moment, which is scheduled for release June 19, saxophonist/composer/arranger/bandleader Mintzer puts the spotlight on Brazilian music.

While some of the tunes are directly from the Brazilian songbook -- "Corcovado" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Berimbau" by Baden Powell, and two newer tunes by Chico Pinheiro -- others "merely make reference to rhythmical grooves from various regions of the country," says Mintzer. "This becomes the springboard for what I most love to do: write for big band in a way that establishes a focus and then breaks free of stylization." The leader's own finely crafted originals include "Aha," a tune originally conceived for the Yellowjackets that's set to a surging Pernambucan baião, and paeans to Ouro Preto, the colonial town in Minas Gerais, and the northeastern city of Recife, where he has visited.

Produced by MCG's Marty Ashby and arranged by Mintzer, For the Moment features guest artist Chico Pinheiro, the rising star guitarist/composer from São Paulo who's been collaborating with Mintzer for the last several years. "Chico is a fantastic instrumentalist," says Mintzer, "and his writing is subtle and intricate, all-encompassing and fresh-sounding, with Brazilian lyricism and the complexity of jazz."

Other special guests are pianist Russell Ferrante, Mintzer's longtime colleague in the Yellowjackets; percussionist Alex Acuña; and drummer Peter Erskine ("He has had so much experience playing with large jazz ensembles, and he knows better than anyone how to shape the music").

Chico Pinheiro and Bob Mintzer
Chico Pinheiro and Bob Mintzer. Rear: Lincoln Goines and Peter Erskine.

After a long relationship with the DMP label that produced 13 albums, Mintzer connected with Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in 2004. The Big Band debuted with Live at MCG and followed up with Old School, New Lessons (2006) and Swing Out (2008), all of which featured Kurt Elling.

The lifelong New Yorker, who's considered one of the tenor saxophonists to come out of the school of New York players in the 1970s (also including Michael BreckerBob BergDave Liebman, and Steve Grossman), and whose big band dates to 1983, when the Brecker brothers asked him to put together an ensemble for their club Seventh Avenue South, has been based in Los Angeles since 2008. He lives in the former house of composer Arnold Schoenberg (his first L.A. residence, 1934-1936), and is the recipient of the Buzz McCoy-endowed chair of jazz studies at the University of Southern California.

Bob MintzerMintzer continues to tour with the Yellowjackets(which he joined in 1990), does workshops all over the world, performs with his New York big band, and serves as a guest conductor/soloist with college and pro bands. But he has found time to assemble an L.A. big band that plays regularly at Vitello's in Studio City.

"The challenge is always to get the most out of whatever situation," he notes. "You can make three players sound huge, and with the right players who are tuned to subtlety and color, all things are possible. The writers who thought that way, Ogerman, Brookmeyer, George Russell, Maria Schneider, Gil Evans, that's the music that resonates with me the most."

The Bob Mintzer Big Band appears at Vitello's in Studio City 6/14-15, and at the Blue Note in Tokyo (with guests Chico Pinheiro and Kurt Elling) 6/20-23. Mintzer will also be touring with the Yellowjackets this summer, appearing at Birdland, NYC, 6/26-30; Freihofer's Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY, 7/1; several European festivals in July; and Scullers in Boston 8/3-4.

Maria Neckam – Unison (Sunnyside 2012

Jazz vocalist Maria Neckam to launch debut album at Deer Head Inn

“Fortunately for listeners interested in bold originality, Maria Neckam has shaped that cyclonic mix of international influences into a sound and style as refreshing as Kat Edmonson, as idiosyncratic as Björk and often as outre as Patty Waters.” (JazzTimes)

Jamie Ousley-A Sea of Voices (TIE Records 2012)

Jazz piano trio music featuring water-inspired compositions in a non-profit project to benefit the environment through Sunshine State Interfaith Power & Light.

I have often considered how I could "give back" with my talents and make a tangible difference in the world with my music. I decided to produce "A Sea of Voices," with water-inspired compositions, as a not-for-profit project to benefit the environment. I have also really enjoyed playing jazz concerts in churches over the past few years, a tradition introduced to me by Ira Sullivan. So, I began searching for an environmental group that I could benefit with my CD sales, which would allow me to perform more jazz concerts in churches as part of my touring. Thus, I found the Sunshine State Interfaith Power and Light organization, whose environmental mission is to mobilize faith communities in Florida to care for creation (www.sunshinestateipl.org). Here, I could combine the worlds of diverse faiths and jazz to benefit a common cause that we can all unite behind: care of our planet! cdbaby

Challenges are met in many different circumstances throughout life. There are challenges that we choose and those that we must face. Guitarist/composer Joel Harrison examines both on his new CD Search (Sunnyside, Mar. 27, 2012). On this project, Harrison chose to broaden his compositional scope to include a more classical influence, most notably by scoring strings into his arrangements. The all-star ensemble performs a moving program of original compositions along with a couple of remarkable arrangements of Olivier Messaien and The Allman Brothers Band - SUNNYSIDE RECORDS

Nico GORI Fred HERSCH - Da Vinci (Bee Jazz 2012)

The duo format is the most intimate dialogue between two musicians, a time when each player has to give up, dig deep to draw out the music from the instruments, the scores, from improvisations by the other. All this happens magically and so it has been from the first time Nico Gori played with Fred Hersch.
Proclaimed by Vanity Fair magazine, “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade or so,” Fred Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievement as a composer, bandleader, and theatrical conceptualist, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists.

Ralf Buschmeyer-JazzSpeak (Chronograph 2012)

'JazzSpeak' features guitarist Ralf Buschmeyer with 3 unique groups from varying regions. First stop is a B-3 trio with New York's John Riley on drums and Winnipeg's Michelle Gregoire on Hammond B3. Session two features Ralf with Vancouver players Bill Coon (2009 Jazz Guitarist of the Year National Jazz Awards), Jodi Proznick on bass, and Jesse Cahill on drums. To finish off 'JazzSpeak' Ralf plays with Toronto ensemble Folkalarm: Kevin Breit (guitarist for Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson and Sisters Euclid), Russ Boswell on bass, and Jorn Anderson on drums.
Most of the 'JazzSpeak' compositions were based off of Jazz Standards to facilitate ease and common ground among musicians. Listeners will hear variations on Jazz/Blues, Stella By Starlight, Minor Blues, and Giant Steps.
With the exception of New York's John Riley, 'JazzSpeak' documents Ralf's initial meetings with the musicians on this CD. The fun and excitement of newly created relationships through music shines in each track.

Mike Stern - All Over the Place (Heads Up 2012)

Since his days with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-1970s, followed by stints with Billy Cobham and Miles Davis band in the 80s, and a solo career that now spans more than 25 years, guitarist Mike Stern has used his jazz roots as a starting point for exploring a range of alternate territories that include R&B, rock, swing, funk, world music and numerous other regions along the musical topography. The recipient of Guitar Player magazine s Certified Legend Award for 2012, he s an artist who s not afraid to bring numerous styles and ideas however diverse into the same place just to see what happens.

All Over the Place is Stern s new recording on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. Set for release on June 19, 2012, the 11-song set aligns the characteristically diverse and adventurous guitarist with a cadre of brilliant guests, including trumpeter Randy Brecker; saxophonist Kenny Garrett; and drummers Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock and Lionel Cordew. Also on hand is a delegation of high-caliber electric and acoustic bass players: Esperanza Spalding, Richard Bona, Victor Wooten, Anthony Jackson, Dave Holland, Tom Kennedy, Will Lee and Victor Bailey.

I ve been playing a lot of different kinds of great music with a lot of different musicians on some of my more recent records, says Stern, whose Big Neighborhood released on Heads Up in 2009 followed a similarly eclectic vibe. I love bebop, swing, rock, all the stuff that a lot of guitar players especially jazz players tend to include in their music. It s the nature of the instrument, but very much a part of my nature as well. There s a lot of music that really inspires me, and it usually covers quite a few territories.

The guitar tends to keep you open-minded, because you hear it in so many places, says Stern, listing many places he himself has ventured along the way not just on All Over the Place, but in earlier work as well. You hear it in rock, in country, in pop, in funk, in classical, you hear it in jazz, you hear it in so many kinds of music that you can immediately identify it on one level or another.

Stern is ready at a moment s notice to go to all of these places and more, and he s ready and willing to bring anyone along for the ride. Music, to me, is a language of the heart, he says. I hope people will get some emotional payoff from what I ve done on this recording. That s the vibe that I continue to go for with all of my music.

"His album Origins, which will be released on May 15, is an ensemble recording that showcases his mastery of 6- and 12-string acoustic guitar over the course of 14 original compositions. “Voyager (For Carl Sagan)” merges his gift for melody, his technical virtuosity and an interest in the intersection of science and philosophy (the liner notes contain a quotation from Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot: A Vision Of The Human Future In Space). “Tsunami,” which was composed after the 2011 disaster in Japan, contains sections that are gently peaceful before bristling with violent riffage. " DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE

Blazin' Quartet - Jalkan Bazz (Challenge 2012)

Jalkan Bazz is the second album of the Blazin' Quartet, recorded with producer and guest guitarist/vocalist the cult artist from Yugoslavia - Rambo Amadeus. The album is published in ex-Yugoslavian territory by Metropolis Records and besides sale directly from the band will be soon available in the rest of the world.

This young band takes regard of no musical borders. They mix everything they like and feels good in order to take the listeners to a trip in their own world. Just like being on a market on which you can find everything from dates to cheap electronics.

Their diverse european background (Balkan, Scandinavia, West-europe) mixes in with their mutual language of Jazz and while the music relies on melody, rhythm and interplay, the absence of a chord instrument gives enough space for electronic sounds and loops.

In short time of existance they have been awarded the Dutch Jazz Competition, the Holland Casino Jazz&Pop Award and have performed in The Netherlands, Serbia, Greece, France, Montenegro, Croatia, Thailand and Brazil at festivals such as North Sea Jazz (2008, 2009, 2010), Novi Sad Jazz, Kalamata Jazz, Samui Jazz, Jazz Na Fabrica and at numerous clubs and venues.

Roby Perissin and the Latin Jazz Ensemble - Jazz With Latin Spice (2012)

Jazz with Latin Spice is the latest project by the Milan, Italy "Latin Jazz Ensemble", a band featuring some great Italian professional musicians. As for a good meal, the songs and the arrangements were chosen to satisfy even the more demanding palates

When I started thinking of this recording I imagined myself as a chef ready to prepare an appetizing meal, made of several courses, matching classic and essential contemporary ingredients to others, unusual and refined.
This new CD, in fact, besides representing as always my enthusiasm and love for life, as well as my passion for jazz and Latin music, includes a set of servings to offer to the listener, made with the intention of stimulating the musical palate, the ear and the imagination, using tasty notes, an adequate dose of rhythm and some Latin-American spices.
To achieve this objective I started by selecting tunes from the repertoire of songs very dear to me, some well-known, others less popular, drawing from the standards of jazz and of Latin-American music. An initial absorbing mix, an infallible cooking base, that allowed me to achieve a rich, tasty menu, diverse and solar, only attainable with the professional contribution and friendship of those who represent the “heart” of the Latin Jazz Ensemble, the three great musicians that with whom I have been working for years and that I thank again, inseparable companions of many live performances in Italy and abroad: Angelo Bifezzi (Piano), Diego Ruvidotti (Trumpet and Flugelhorn) and Paolo Traino (Drums). I believe the best way to celebrate their musical skills is to listen to them.
During my life, and while living the active music scene of Milan, I have had the chance to meet and get to know and appreciate numerous talented musicians. Three of these, Pino Bifano (Guitar), Gino Carravieri (Drums) and Luca Dell’ Anna (Piano), have excited and moved me with their skills, talent, professionalism and fun attitude as musicians. I could not restrain from asking them to participate as “special guests” on this recording, adding sonority, taste and personality to my recipe, unattainable otherwise. My sincere thanks to them for their contribution.
Equally important to the project has been the participation to this CD of the Tenor Sax, Rudi Manzoli, a jazz player with a refined touch to be enjoyed. I was honored to be able to have his performance and thank Rudi for his priceless collaboration.
To garnish the meal, I could not do without enriching some servings with the basis of my musical roots, Latin-American percussions, adding here and there their accents and vitality. An exercise that never ceases to amuse me and that I hope will elicit the same results from you, the listener.
On this CD (and it is the third) we have mixed, blended and cooked to perfection the whole meal using the well-equipped recording studio, Soluzioni Musicali in Milan of Stefano Spina, whose skillful and patient courtesy is essential to every well-made serving.
With the hope of having managed to satisfy even the more demanding palates, I want to thank those who will find the way and the moment to savor this endeavor. Good music, simple, spontaneous, intense, joyful ……. wishing to all the best of appetites.
Love & music!
